Just in case you haven’t heard – it’s 2020, there’s a viral pandemic going on. Lives are being lost, businesses worldwide are disrupted and on the brink of closing. This also affects freelancers as we know it.

Well, let’s just say for most of us reading this, you’re probably worried about keeping a steady income going for the next year or two.

You’re not the type of person to cry over spilt milk. No way, jose! You’re the toughest, meanest, baddest creative around. Nothing’s ever going to bring you down. Especially not a global pandemic (cue Survivor’s “Eye of the tiger”)

Why Twitter is essential for freelancers in 2020

With the power of the internet, everything is possible. You’ve probably got skills you’ve built up over the course of your career. Maybe you’re just starting out in the working world.

Unfortunately you’re doing it right in the middle of a global pandemic and recession. But there’s absolutely nothing to worry about.

With social distancing rules in place, you’ve got an entire audience going online. According to the figures of Twitter on Statista, that audience is as large as 330 million monthly active users as of the first quarter of 2019.

3 Ways Freelancers Can Find Clients On Twitter

As a freelancer, I absolutely love Twitter to get clients and has helped me generate a full-time income doing so. Even during the current crisis of 2020. Here is how freelancers can get clients on Twitter.

#1 Position Yourself As An Expert In Your Niche

Positioning yourself as an expert in your niche tells the world you know about your industry. Also, what problems your potential clients are going through right now.

Example #1

Lets say you are a virtual assistant helping coaches with webinars and the whole process of setting up and marketing webinars.

Get posting comments on relevant posts to do with webinar software, marketing software, Facebook advertising, and so on.

What this does is when potential clients look at your profile they can see your previous tweets. Showing that you know about the industry and are an expert in the industry.

Example #2

Now for another example because you could be a virtual assistant that offers admin services to female life coaches.

What you can do here to position yourself as an authority is by following relevant conversations on Twitter that life coaches are having. Then post valuable content in your post. Really add meaningful content to the conversations.

The real key to success on posting comments on Twitter is to always add value to conversations and posts wherever you can. This really does position you as an authority in your industry.

When you’re seen as an authority in your niche, people sit up and pay attention to you.

#2 Check Out The Job Listings

Job boards are on Twitter. If you’re a freelancer, you need to start following the ones that are relevant to you.

Put them on a Twitter list and regularly check them out.

#3 Get Targeting Clients

Now I am not telling you to start cyber-stalking prospects, but use this advice and start interacting with specific people.

Create a list of 100 potential clients that are active on Twitter. Keep this list though on Google Spreadsheets. If you do a list on Twitter, it sends them a notification.

What you want to aim to do is comment on posts or my favorite Retweet and comment on posts. You only comment where you can add value as you only ever want to be adding value.

What you do not want to do is be commenting on every post and doing 20 blog comments a day. That frankly just looks weird and desperate for attention.

Only comment enough to get their attention and start having conversations directly with them. When you have their attention you can start pitching your solution to a gap or problem they have right now.

In A Nutshell,

There is no need to let the current world crisis stop you from growing your freelance business. In fact, businesses still want freelancers, you just need to position yourself so that they are tripping over themselves to get you. After you’ve pitched your clients and landed a meeting with them, use these 5 tips to close the deal. Once you’ve got that client, create a freelance contract and make sure that you get paid.
